India vs South Africa 2nd Test – Amla & Petersen lead Strong Start

14 February 2010 183 No Comment

Earlier South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first. Smith started South african score by hitting Zaher khan in the first over last ball for four. Pertersen is making in debut in the absense of Mark Boucher.

Zaher Khan claimed the first wicket as Smith became a first victim to India. debutant Alviro Petersen and Hashim Amla batted with the clarity of thought that is the hallmark of teams way ahead in a contest. Despite the early loss of Graeme Smith, to a beauty from Zaheer Khan, Petersen and Amla counterattacked without fuss or the need to go in the air and still motored along at 4.46 an over in the first session.

Petersen, who made his way into the side on the back of 1376 runs in the past first-class season, got to a 55-ball half-century in his first session of Test cricket. Amla seemed to be carrying on from his 253 not out at Nagpur, whipping from in front of the stumps and cutting with supreme confidence. The first 20 fetched 17 boundaries, 10 of them from Petersen

Petersen’s game plan remained the same: press forward whenever possible, defend if the line is good, and go for runs if it is either too wide or too straight. No runs down the ground – four flicks for boundaries and two gorgeous cover-drives worked fine for him.
