Cerrone is certainly not the kind of guy who underestimates his opponents. He does, however, like to mislead them into underestimating him. And he can take a beating.
“Homer Simpson lets guys beat him up and then, when they get tired, he takes them out,” Cerrone said in an interview with Frank Curreri. “That’s kind of my game plan. My opponents get exhausted from kicking my a—and then I say, ‘Now they’re tired, I should go.’”
So, once his opponent feels secure and superior he suddenly pulls out the big guns and they often don’t even know what suddenly hit them, or rather submits them.
Based on this strategy, Ratcliff should hold off any major attacks and keep his guard up throughout the entire fight. Patience will certainly be a virtue if he wants to beat Cerrone at his own game.
While Cerrone (10-2) has slightly more fighting experience than Ratcliff (7-1), he is by no means invincible as his most recent two losses to Ben Henderson and Jamie Varner prove. He is, however, nearly invincible on the ground where he shines as submission artist.
Ratcliff has quite the opposite fighting style of Cerrone, but very similar to Henderson and Varner: he loves to let his hands and feet go at the ring of the bell and (T)KO his opponent in the first or second round. This could in fact play into Cerrone’s hands if he can handle the onslaught of Ratcliff’s destructive punches and kicks. It could also turn into a deja vu experience of Cerrone’s Henderson/Varner experience.
Ultimately, Cerrone will have to take Ratcliff to the ground early if he wants to submit him. Trying to take a beating from Ratcliff first seems way too risky after his losses to Henderson and Varner. He should apply what he has learned in those two bouts and move up the time line for his ground attack with an early take down and a subsequent submission because Ratcliff is a quick (T)KO finisher.
